Zero FIR and e-FIR under the new criminal law
Under section 173 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (in force since July 2024), information about a cognizable offence can be given at any police station, irrespective of where the offence happened — this is the “Zero FIR”, later transferred to the station that has jurisdiction. The same section allows information by electronic communication; it is taken on record once the informant signs it within three days. The informant is entitled to a free copy of the FIR.
